It goes without saying that most survival-horror fans consider Resident Evil 2 to be the benchmark when it comes to the genre. In fact, ever since Nintendo released the Resident Evil HD Remaster for Gamecube, Resident Evil 2 die-hards have been jonesing for a re-release to the second installment in the extremely popular zombie franchise. However, in the past, most gamers decided that the best course of action was to not hold their breath.

Having said that, some folks recently decided to get their own T-Virus fix before Capcom could weigh in on the issue by using Unreal Engine 4 to make a fan remaster entitled Resident Evil 2 Reborn HD that supposedly releases this summer. As it happens, just yesterday, the franchise’s official publisher noticed the unauthorized remake and had the producer of this year’s million-selling Resident Evil HD Remaster – Yoshiaki Hirabayashi – take to their Facebook page and ask fans if they would be interested in a Capcom remake or remaster for the popular survival-horror title. Within several hours of being published, the post blew up, and now has nearly 25,000 likes, and close to 3,000 shares.

Bearing all of this in mind, such a massive outcry from the public regarding the revisitation of Leon Kennedy’s and Claire Redfield’s terror-filled adventure at the very least necessitates a response from Capcom. Now, thanks to the fans’ support, Hirabayashi has announced he officially pitched a Resident Evil 2 remake to his boss today.

Although the contents of the meeting are obviously on a need-to-know basis, the picture of Biohazard 2 – Japan’s title for the game – posted on Resident Evil’s Facebook page and at the top of the article is a propitious sign that things are definitely on the right track. Regarding the matter, Hirabayashi writes on the social media site:

“Right after the RE HD Remaster project was finished, I actually started putting together my ideas for this “RE2 Project”. So, I just brushed it up and went to see my boss to present the basic concept of the project already…”

While Hirabayashi doesn’t go into explicit detail as to what people can expect from the Resident Evil 2 project, it’s worthy to note that he and his development team will need to put in a lot of work to rebuild the game, since the technology with which the original was developed is outdated by today’s standards. And should the Resident Evil 2 remake be a success – as if that’s a legitimate concern – Capcom will surely continue with their plans of more HD remasters for their releases.

While the potential Resident Evil 2 remake has received no official announcement regarding its release date or console ports, today’s revelation from Capcom’s R&D division makes the possibility of the game’s creation even more likely. Considering that, gaming fans should check back with Game Rant for any breaking news concerning the title.
