Ever since the debut of the Fantastic Four as the First Family of Comics, Marvel has been all about the family. From the confusing family trees of the X-Men to the interconnected characters of the Avengers, family has continued to play a large role in the development of old characters and the introduction of new enemies.
The best example of this on the Avengers comes from the Pym Family, which features an odd assortment of characters that all share a familial connection to founding Avenger Hank Pym/Ant-Man/Giant-Man/Goliath/Yellowjacket. So today we’ll be taking a closer look at the powerful members of the Pym Family.
Despite Ultron’s desire to wipe out humanity, he is also burdened with the same loneliness felt by humans, so he has attempted to create a mate for himself on a few occasions. The first attempt resulted in the creation of Jocasta, which he kidnapped and brainwashed his own creator Hank Pym to create for him.
Jocasta was created using the brain patterns of Pym’s own love Janet van Dyne/Wasp, which would lead Jocasta to rebel against her creator to work with the Avengers on many occasions. Jocasta’s biggest gift is her ability to interface with other computer systems, though her robotic body has offensive and defensive capabilities as well.
After Jocasta’s betrayal, Ultron decided to create a second “wife” with the brainwashed help of his own creator, Hank Pym. He created Alkhema with an adamantium body and the same drive to wipe out all organic life from Earth, though Alkhema might be more dedicated to this goal than Ultron himself.
Alkhema’s brain patterns come from West Coast Avenger Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird, and Alkhema specializes in creating robotic “children” she called War Toys to help her in her goals. Alkhema even created her own synthezoid child named Antigone, who was part of a plan by Ultron that was programmed into Alkhema’s subconsciousness.
8 VICTOR MANCHA
Following one of the many defeats and destructions of Ultron, it was revealed that one of his heads survived, and was able to manipulate a woman into bringing him parts to rebuild his body by promising to give her a child. He would use her DNA and his own cybernetics to create a child cyborg named Victor Mancha, who would become his sleeper agent against the Avengers.
Victor’s abilities would awaken during an encounter with the young Runaways, and his origins as Ultron’s son were revealed along with his electromagnetic abilities. Victor would rebel against his father and go on to join the Runaways. He would also later work with a special Avengers team alongside his brother Vision and grandfather Hank Pym.
7 JANET VAN DYNE
Janet van Dyne was a founding member of the Avengers, and she worked closely alongside Hank Pym/Ant-Man, who provided her with the suit and the Pym Particles that allowed her to shrink, though exposure has allowed her to control her size-altering at will.
Wasp has led the Avengers at various times over the years, has training from some of the best combatants in the Marvel Universe, and also is able to fire powerful bio-electric stings that have been able to stop the Hulk when fired strategically. Wasp is also able to increase her size as well as shrink, giving her a surprise edge in battle when needed.
6 NADIA VAN DYNE
The All-New, All-Different, Unstoppable Wasp was originally known as Nadia Pym, as she is the daughter of Hank Pym and his first wife, Maria Trovaya. Maria was abducted and killed which inspired Hank to become Ant-Man, but what he didn’t know was that Nadia has been born and raised in the Russian Red Room program.
Nadia would escape after studying her father’s Pym Particle, and she would create her own costume as the new Wasp and build a strong relationship with Jan van Dyne, which would inspire her to take Jan’s name instead of her father, who she never met. Nadia has her father’s intelligence and mastery of the Pym Particle coupled with training from the same place that trained Black Widow.
5 VIV VISION
Vivian was created by the Vision alongside her synthezoid mother and brother, though she and Vision are the only members of the family that remain. Viv shares most of her father’s phasing abilities, but her battle with her emotions and the grief over the loss of her family has impacted her superhero career.
Viv technically has two human siblings in Billy Kaplan/Wiccan and Tommy Shepherd/Speed as they are the reincarnated sons of Scarlet Witch and Vision, though Wanda is the sole magical parent and Vision has little to no relationship with his former “children.”
4 HANK PYM
While Dr. Henry “Hank” Pym has been a founding member of the Avengers and has worked with a few different versions of the Avengers over the years through many different costumed identities, his greatest gift to the team, and sometimes his greatest curse, has always been his high intelligence.
Pym’s various powers granted to him by the Pym Particles and his years of experience with those powers make him the strongest user of the size-changing particle, but his intelligence has given him the edge he needed to survive. Unfortunately, Hank Pym sacrificed his life to try and stop Ultron, though that resulted in the most frightening version of Ultron we’ve seen yet.
The synthezoid known as Vision was created by Ultron as a tool to infiltrate and destroy the Avengers, however, Vision would turn on his creator (as almost all of them do) and instead join with the Avengers to take down his “father.”
Vision was created with the brain patterns of Simon Williams/Wonder Man, and he has complete molecular control over his body, allowing him to become either hard as a diamond or immaterial. He is also able to project energy blasts from the diamond in his forehead, and he has rebuilt himself many times over the years from almost complete destruction.
2 WONDER MAN
Simon Williams/Wonder Man is an interesting inclusion here, as while his brain patterns were used in the creation of the original Vision, so was Mockingbird and she isn’t included here. The difference between the two (aside from their power levels) comes in the relationships that formed after the creation of the resultant artificial beings.
While Simon was initially turned off by the use of his brain patterns, he would soon come to regard the Vision as his brother, even more so than his real brother Eric Williams/Grim Reaper. As Wonder Man, Simon is powered by ionic energy, which gives him incredible strength and endurance, along with an energy form that could potentially make him immortal.
Hank Pym first created Ultron after experimenting on the android Dragon Man, which had been brought to life using alchemy. Pym sought to create the world’s most advanced artificial intelligence using his own brain patterns, and he succeeded. Unfortunately, Ultron immediately gained sentience and erased Pym’s memories, which allowed Ultron to disappear and plan.
Ultron would recreate itself a few times before first attacking the Avengers as Ultron-5, and would continue to return to attack the Avengers with more powerful iterations of itself over and over again. The threat of Ultron would be felt across the galaxy and eventually result in the death of Hank Pym, which led to the current horrifying Ultron Pym version.
